Divine Remembrance: The Key to opening the secret space in the heart.

Remembrance is a key practice that the University of Spiritual Healing & Sufism recommends. A deep spiritual practice called remembrance connects the practitioner with the Divine through the spiritual heart. In it, you can escape the cares of daily life and access the well of unconditional love deep within. Practicing remembrance is an incredibly peaceful, nurturing, and healing path.

You can, God willing, cleanse your heart of anger, resentment, fear, hurt, and pain by practicing remembrance.

How does one do the Sufi style of remembrance? It’s easy. Just follow these steps:

1) Put your feet on the floor and sit comfortably in a quiet place. Feel completely grounded and supported by your chair.

2) Breathe deeply and gently as you close your eyes. Notice how your body feels as you do so. Do you have any physical discomforts, such as tightness or aches and pains? Note what you feel in your body.

There is a tender spot two inches below your collarbone and in the center of your back. The energetic heart is located here. Concentrate on inhaling and exhaling while feeling your heart. Sometimes it is helpful to place your hand on your heart.

3) When you’re ready to begin, choose a name of God that symbolizes the Highest for you. If you’d rather not use the name of God, you can simply say the “aww” sound. When I first started, I used the names, “Yah and Aloha”. I found Aloha, which means love, to have a significant effect as it contains the Aww, and Haa sound, which is great for opening the heart. I have read that the AAW sound is the heart sound as referred to by Qigong practitioners. Some have even used the “Om” sound. The best thing to remember is to use whichever name and sound you are most comfortable with. For those who want to know more about the different names of God as taught in Sufism, I have found 2 amazing books which help with the understanding of each name and how the sound resonates and has a specific effect on the body. Whichever you choose, you will repeat the name of God aloud or silently, as if you were speaking the name directly into the heart.

4) As mentioned above, it’s fine to address God however you like. Imagine yourself saying that name right into that heart space. Sufis, use the name “Allah,” which means “The One” in Arabic. In the vibration of the “aah” sound, the heart opens, while the vibration of the “lah” sound enters the heart. Use a name that resonates deeply with your heart and spirit.

Don’t become concerned about stray thoughts. Whenever you have a thought, simply let it go, return to your breath and your heart.

Try not to push or force anything to happen. Try opening your heart space gently. You may notice the space becoming warmer or feeling softer as it opens.

5) Softly repeat the name of God. Keep saying God’s name and let the name carry you beyond where you are right now. Relax your thoughts and feelings, and allow the Divine spirit to resound throughout your being. Let it fill and overfill you.

Starting with ten to thirty minutes per day, you can slowly increase to an hour or more. This exercise will increase your sense of peace and connection to the Divine when you do it daily.

After your practice, make a note of how you feel. Do you notice any differences?
